Technical description:

Model: Golf 9

What's new

Volkswagen has shown its Wolfsburg workforce the first silhouette of the next-generation Golf, and the key message is clear: the car is meant to remain instantly recognizable as a Golf. The outline presented at a company meeting looks close to the current Golf 8 and also recalls the Golf 7 before it. This is a deliberate move toward continuity rather than a sharp visual break with the past.

Volkswagen design boss Andreas Mindt is behind that direction. The Golf 9 is being framed as evidence that the brand has learned from the ID.3 experience, a car intended to serve as an electric Golf but launched with a separate design language, a different platform and an interior concept that split opinion among buyers. Sales did not match the expectations built around that project.

The new plan is to narrow the gap between combustion and electric Volkswagens. Instead of asking buyers to move from a familiar car to something that looks unrelated, the company wants the name and proportions to remain familiar. That is why the replacement for the ID.3 is expected to be called ID. Golf rather than ID.3 Mark II or another alphanumeric label.

  • the first outline of the next-generation Golf was shown to the workforce in Wolfsburg,
  • the car is set to retain clear visual links with the Golf 8 and Golf 7,
  • the electric successor to the ID.3 is expected to use the ID. Golf name,
  • the combustion Golf is planned to continue alongside its electric counterpart.

Specifications and technology

No technical figures are given for the Golf 9, such as power output, battery capacity, range, dimensions or performance. The main product and engineering point is the strategy itself: the future Golf line is expected to include a combustion model and an electric ID. Golf. Both are intended to look like members of the same family rather than two separate design branches.

Volkswagen is moving away from the idea that electric models must look completely different from their combustion relatives. The ID.3 used a very different body and cabin philosophy, but the next Golf puts recognition first. That means familiar proportions, a Golf-like silhouette and design cues associated with the nameplate over several generations.

The cabin approach is changing as well. Physical buttons are set to return to the steering wheel and center console, moving away from the touchscreen-heavy setup used in recent Volkswagen interiors. A retro digital display mode inspired by the original Mk1 Golf instrument cluster is also planned, showing that references to the model’s past are becoming part of the brand’s current product thinking.

The Polo is cited as the template. The electric ID. Polo is scheduled to debut in final form in late April 2026, and prototypes retain the wide C-pillars and familiar proportions buyers associate with the model. The same logic is expected for the Golf: electrification without abandoning the name, the stance and the emotional link built through previous generations.

Markets, prices and availability

The replacement is not expected to arrive until 2028 at the earliest. No exact day, month or public debut event is named. Prices, trim levels, powertrain details and launch markets are also not stated.

The combustion Golf remains part of Volkswagen’s plans. Production is due to move to Mexico starting in 2027, freeing capacity in German plants. A similar relocation has already happened with the Polo, whose production was moved to South Africa.

Keeping the combustion car alive means Volkswagen wants to serve demand for conventional models for as long as the market requires it. The company has already indicated that the gasoline Golf could remain available for years alongside its electric twin. That gives the brand two sales paths without the visual split that defined the ID.3 period.

The Wolfsburg preview also had an internal purpose. Volkswagen has been dealing with factory closure threats, labor disputes and cost-cutting battles that affected its German workforce. Showing the next Golf, one of the brand’s most important models, was therefore not only a product preview but also a signal aimed at employees.

Verdict

The Golf 9 is being shaped around recognition rather than a clean break with its predecessors. Volkswagen is betting on the name, the proportions and the familiar character of its core hatchback while preparing both combustion and electric routes for the next generation.
