What's new
Volkswagen presented the ID. Cross Concept on the eve of IAA Mobility, and the production version of this electric SUV is due to debut in summer 2026. The concept is described as already very close to series production. The model is planned to become available from 2027.
The car is positioned by size between the small-car segment and the compact class. With a length of 4.16 metres, the five-door body matches the format of the current Volkswagen T-Cross. Volkswagen calls the ID. Cross a design study that previews the design language of new models from the brand in the coming years.
The new look is called “Pure Positive”. At the front, a three-dimensional light signature carries an illuminated Volkswagen logo in the centre, giving the impression that the car is smiling. Volkswagen also speaks of a strong clarity in the shapes, combining current elements with references to the brand’s past.
The C-pillars include cues from the Golf and the Bulli. Further character comes from the dark green “Urban Jungle” paint, 21-inch alloy wheels with inlays and tyres carrying a specially designed stripe pattern. Wheel-arch surrounds, sill inlays and the lower sections of the front and rear bumpers are made of grey plastic to suggest robustness.
Specifications and technology
The technical basis is the MEB electric modular platform. Volkswagen says it will be developed further into MEB+, with new software and functional extensions for many systems among the changes. In the ID. Cross, drive is sent to the front wheels.
The powertrain is rated at 155 kW/211 hp. Top speed is stated at 175 km/h, while the projected range is up to 420 km. Volkswagen has not released official battery sizes, but the largest format is expected to be a 58 kWh pack, already announced for the ID.2 all, which has since been renamed ID. Polo.

The wheelbase measures 2.60 metres, and the electric packaging is said to provide good space for up to five occupants. The rear luggage compartment holds 450 litres. At the front there is an additional 25-litre frunk.
The cockpit is described as tidy and digital. The instrument panel measures 11 inches, while the touchscreen measures 13 inches. Volkswagen promises self-explanatory menu structures, natural voice control, direct buttons, high material quality and fabric-covered surfaces.
The cabin is dominated by a warm beige tone. Plant motifs on the screens and real plants in the apparently free-floating centre console are intended to create a more comfortable ambience. All seats can be folded flat to form a reclining surface.
Markets, prices and availability
Volkswagen showed the concept around IAA Mobility, which runs from 8 to 14 September. The production ID. Cross is scheduled to be presented in summer 2026. The car is expected to be available from 2027 as an electric SUV positioned in the lower parts of the range.
The model is part of a new electric small-car offensive from the Volkswagen Group starting in 2026. The ID. Polo will open the sequence with a world premiere in the first half of 2026. Shortly afterwards, the ID. Polo GTI will follow, before the series ID. Cross debuts in the summer of the same year.

The new electric small cars will not appear only under the core Volkswagen brand. Sister models from Skoda and Seat/Cupra are also planned. Volkswagen has not announced the price of the ID. Cross, using only the flexible adjective “affordable”; this could reportedly mean an entry price between 25,000 and 30,000 euros.
Volkswagen brand chief Thomas Schäfer described the ID. Cross as a milestone for the brand. He said his goal from the beginning had been to develop the best version of Volkswagen so far. He also stressed that this is not just a concept, because inside and out the car is already very close to the series version.
