What's new

BMW is developing a facelifted 7 Series Protection based on the updated G70 generation, with its debut expected in 2027. This is a factory-armored limousine rather than a car converted after production. The refreshed model is set to retain the Protection Core concept, a steel safety cell integrated into the vehicle from the earliest stages of assembly.

The current 760i xDrive Protection VR9 recently appeared in King Charles III's motorcade in Washington and then surfaced again in Bermuda a few days later. The black sedan with European plates was accompanied by Secret Service SUVs and diplomatic motorcade vehicles. That use case underlines the nature of this model: it travels with protected principals, is flown in by military transport, checked by advance teams and kept in secure garages until required.

BMW has been building bulletproof cars since the late 1970s, beginning with the E23-generation 733 High Security. Nearly five decades later, the next version of the armored 7 Series is in development. The facelift is expected to keep the focus on ballistic certification, a purpose-built body structure and equipment designed to keep occupants alive during an attack.

Specifications and technology

The current 7 Series Protection can stop 7.62 x 51 mm NATO armor-piercing rounds in its body panels, while its VPAM 10-rated glass withstands 7.62 x 54R sniper rounds. The floor and roof are designed to survive multiple hand grenade detonations. The facelifted car is expected to carry VR9 certification as standard, with VPAM 10 available for clients who need the highest civilian protection level.

  • standard VR9 certification,
  • optional VPAM 10 protection,
  • self-sealing fuel tank,
  • automatic fire extinguisher,
  • intercom system,
  • fresh-air supply for chemical attacks,
  • PAX run-flat tires that keep rolling with zero pressure,
  • power-closing doors that also serve as emergency exits.

The Protection Core is built at BMW's Dingolfing plant and is part of the structure from the first weld. That is the main distinction between a factory-armored vehicle and a retrofit armored conversion. The price of that approach is mass: the outgoing 760i Protection weighs 3,965 kg, while the electric i7 Protection reaches 4,900 kg.

The gasoline model is due for a powertrain change because the outgoing V8 will not return in its current form. BMW plans to replace the 760i with an M Performance-branded M760 variant, so the gasoline Protection model is likely to move to that setup. The electric version should benefit from sixth-generation battery technology using Rimac-assembled round cells with 20 percent higher energy density.

Markets, prices and availability

The facelifted BMW 7 Series Protection is expected to launch in 2027, but no specific month or debut day has been given. Pricing, market rollout, full version structure and performance figures have not been announced. The program is nevertheless described as covering both gasoline and electric Protection variants.

BMW recently won a major contract to supply 7 Series Protection vehicles to Germany's Federal Criminal Police. In that contest it beat Mercedes-Benz and Audi, a notable result because German federal protection fleets are used hard and evaluated strictly. The armored sedan segment is small in volume, but it carries strategic value for manufacturers that compete at this level.

Mercedes has its Guard line, and Audi has also competed in this area. BMW, however, continues to secure contracts that matter, from German federal use to royal protection duties. In this class, the decisive factors are structural resistance, armored mass and the ability to keep moving after an attack.

Verdict

The facelifted BMW 7 Series Protection is shaping up as a continuation of a very specialized factory-built armored sedan. With VR9 certification, optional VPAM 10 protection, heavy integrated armor and development work on both combustion and electric versions, the update is about survival engineering as much as it is about a model refresh.
