What's new
The Dongfeng Forthing 5 BEV replaces the electric Forthing 5 EV and its key change is the move to an 800-volt electrical architecture. The model was presented in early October at the Paris motor show and is already available to order in Germany. The visual update is restrained, while the technical package has changed far more substantially.
The body remains that of a five-seat compact SUV, although the car has become slightly shorter at 4.55 metres. The exterior changes include a modified front apron and revised lighting design. The biggest differences compared with the previous generation are found in the drive system, battery, charging capability and driving range.

Specifications and technology
The new powertrain produces 200 kW/272 hp and 360 Nm of maximum torque. The previous model delivered 150 kW/204 hp, so the gain in output is a central part of the update. The SUV weighs around 1.9 tonnes and is expected to reach a top speed of up to 180 km/h.
Energy comes from a new lithium iron phosphate battery with a capacity of 75 kWh. The outgoing model used an 86 kWh pack, yet the claimed WLTP range has risen to 501 km thanks to a more efficient drive system. Maximum DC charging power is 160 kW, cutting the 20 to 80 percent charging stop to less than 18 minutes.

Inside, Dongfeng uses a cockpit that largely does without conventional switches. A compact instrument display sits behind the steering wheel, while a 15.6-inch touchscreen serves as the central control and display unit. The importer promises good space, particularly for passengers in the rear.
Markets, prices and availability
The Forthing 5 BEV made its debut in early October at the Paris motor show. The model is now available to order in Germany. Prices start at around 41,000 euros.
The boot holds 410 litres, and folding the 60:40 split rear backrest expands capacity to 1,420 litres. The equipment list includes electrically adjustable front seats with memory, heating, ventilation and massage functions. It also includes a panoramic glass roof with an electric sunblind, dual-zone automatic climate control and an electric tailgate.

Verdict
The Forthing 5 BEV keeps the familiar compact SUV format but changes the technical basis with 800-volt hardware, more power, faster charging and longer range.
