Top speed: 250 km/h in M350 xDrive

What's new

The new BMW 3 Series has been shown as a combustion-powered model led by the M350 xDrive, which brings 443 hp, a 3.0-litre inline-six and a Drift Moment function. That is the central message of the reveal: the classic 3 Series line continues alongside the electric i3. The car uses the Neue Klasse design language and is closely related in appearance to the electric i3.

The combustion version is easiest to identify by its conventional kidney grille. The door handles sit flush with the body, while the headlights and grille form one lighting graphic at the front. M Performance versions will receive yellow M lights, and BMW will offer M Le Castellet Blue metallic paint.

BMW also plans to expand the BMW Individual colour range in 2027. The proportions include short overhangs and strongly marked wheel arches. The result links the Neue Klasse family look with a conventional petrol powertrain.

Specifications and technology

Engines and drivetrain

The range-topping M350 xDrive uses a 3.0-litre six-cylinder inline engine assisted by a 48 V mild-hybrid system. The European specification lists 326 kW, or 443 hp, and about 580 Nm of torque. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h takes 4.1 seconds, while top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h.

BMW describes the M350 xDrive as an entry point into the world of BMW M. The full M3 remains higher in the hierarchy, but the M350 is set to be the most powerful M Performance model in 3 Series history. Adaptive M suspension will be standard.

  • BMW 330 with a 2.0-litre turbo engine producing 255 hp and about 400 Nm.
  • BMW 330 with rear-wheel drive.
  • BMW 330 xDrive with all-wheel drive.
  • BMW M350 xDrive as the top combustion model.

The 330 continues with a four-cylinder petrol engine. Gear changes are handled by an 8-speed Steptronic transmission, and the sprint to 100 km/h takes 5.9 seconds. BMW is dropping the letter “i” from petrol model names to separate them more clearly from electric cars.

Drift Moment can send the engine’s full output to the rear axle. In practice, xDrive can temporarily behave like rear-wheel drive. BMW says a similar solution had previously been reserved for M GmbH models, but Drift Moment will not be available from launch and is due to arrive through a software update in 2027.

The cabin adopts Neue Klasse solutions. The driver gets Panoramic iDrive, Panoramic Vision stretching across the windscreen, an optional 3D Head-Up Display and a central 17.9-inch screen. The system runs BMW Operating System X, based on the Android Open Source Project, while the voice assistant uses Amazon Alexa plus technology.

An onboard app will allow films and series to be watched while parked. The steering wheel keeps physical buttons, and M Performance versions add switches for M modes and the Boost function. The seats will offer electric adjustment and memory, and a panoramic roof will also be available.

Markets, prices and availability

The market launch of the combustion versions of the new BMW 3 Series is planned for early 2027. Production will take place in Dingolfing, BMW Group’s largest European plant. The electric i3, by contrast, is built in Munich, where the first 3 Series was produced in 1975.

The Munich plant is due to switch next year exclusively to electric Neue Klasse models. Combustion engines and key electric-drive components will be produced in Steyr, Austria. High-voltage batteries will be supplied by the new plant in Irlbach-Strasskirchen.

Prices for the new BMW 3 Series have not been announced, and no detailed market list or full equipment structure has been given. It is known that the electric i3 is also due to reach customers at the beginning of 2027. BMW has also announced a plug-in hybrid that is scheduled to appear within the next year.

  • i3 50 xDrive: 469 hp, 108.7 kWh battery, up to 912 km WLTP range.
  • i3 40 xDrive: 374 hp, 82.8 kWh battery, up to 710 km WLTP range.
  • i3 M60 xDrive: planned to join the range in 2027.
  • Plug-in hybrid: announced for the next year.

Verdict

The new BMW 3 Series combines the Neue Klasse look with a petrol powertrain led by the M350 xDrive’s 3.0-litre inline-six. The key figures, 443 hp, 580 Nm, 4.1 seconds to 100 km/h and Drift Moment, show that the combustion 3 Series remains a major part of the line-up next to the electric i3.
