What's new
The Mercedes AMG GT SUV has been revealed as AMG’s first in-house-developed full-size SUV and the second model to use the 800-volt AMG architecture. It measures just over five metres long and carries clear visual links to the AMG GT 4-Door. The market target is equally clear, because AMG’s Michael Schütt said the car was benchmarked directly against the latest Porsche Cayenne.
The front end uses a similar grille and lighting treatment to the saloon, while the rear adopts an almost identical darkened lighting arrangement. The bodywork features numerous functional cuts, vents and slashes, and there is a small active rear wing at the top of the tailgate. In profile, the shape brings some Aston Martin DBX cues, but the development reference named by AMG is the Cayenne.
The cabin follows the approach seen in the saloon. The doors are trimmed in similar material, with contrasting diamond-pattern stitching, and the seat controls sit on the door panels in the familiar Mercedes position. The full-surface Sky Control glass roof can switch individual panels between transparent and opaque, and the AMG logo can be projected onto the glass at the press of a button.
Specifications and technology
Powertrain and performance
The 53 version opens the range with 537bhp and 800Nm of torque. It will support the line-up until the 55 and 63 versions arrive next year. Its 0-62mph time is around 4 seconds, giving even the entry model a very strong performance baseline for a large SUV.
The GT 63 uses three axial-flux motors developed by the UK firm Yasa. Its continuous output is 711bhp, while short bursts raise that figure to 1,153bhp. Combined torque is a huge 2,000Nm, and the 0-62mph sprint takes about 2 seconds.
- AMG 53: 537bhp, 800Nm and around 4 seconds from 0-62mph.
- AMG 55: confirmed as a later member of the range.
- AMG 63: three axial-flux motors, 711bhp continuous output, up to 1,153bhp in short bursts and 2,000Nm.
The 800-volt architecture is one of the core technical points of the project. Battery capacity, driving range, charging power and top speed have not been stated, so the clearest specification picture currently comes from the output, torque, motor layout and acceleration figures. Those numbers show how AMG has framed the SUV as an electric performance model rather than simply a practical derivative.
| Parameter | Value |
|---|
| Length | just over 5 metres |
| AMG 53 power | 537bhp |
| AMG 53 torque | 800Nm |
| AMG 63 continuous power | 711bhp |
| AMG 63 short-burst power | 1,153bhp |
| AMG 63 torque | 2,000Nm |
| Boot space | 607 to 1,740 litres |
| Frunk | 78 litres |
Practicality is where the SUV separates itself most clearly from its saloon sibling. A six-foot adult could sit behind a similarly sized driver with spare headroom and legroom. Boot space is 607 litres with the rear seats in place and 1,740 litres with them folded, while the front compartment adds another 78 litres for charging cables and a couple of soft bags.
Markets, prices and availability
Sales and personalisation
European sales begin on 20 October 2026. The UK is expected to follow with prices and specifications very soon, and first deliveries are scheduled for spring. Buyers should expect a starting figure of around £110,000 for the 53.
The 55 and 63 versions are not due before early 2027. The Manufaktur programme will bring more than 60 exclusive paint finishes, and AMG-forged wheels can be enhanced with coloured accents including Angel Blue and Sunny Lime. Seatbelts can also be ordered in matching or contrasting colours.
- Europe: sales start on 20 October 2026.
- UK: prices and specifications are expected very soon.
- First deliveries: spring.
- Estimated AMG 53 starting price: around £110,000.
- AMG 55 and AMG 63: not due before early 2027.
The Porsche Cayenne is the direct benchmark named by AMG. This is not merely a segment comparison, because Schütt explicitly said the latest Cayenne was used as the reference point. That makes the GT 63’s 1,153bhp burst output and 2,000Nm torque figure central to the way the model is positioned.
Verdict
The Mercedes AMG GT SUV combines a large SUV body with an 800-volt electric platform and performance figures that put the GT 63 in very rare territory. The key launch date for Europe is now set for 20 October 2026, while the full range picture will become clearer when the 55 and 63 arrive after the initial 53.
