What's new

The Kia Sorento gains a new entry-level diesel version with front-wheel drive, while the 2.2 CRDi model had previously been available only with all-wheel drive. That is the main change in the range because it lowers the starting point for the diesel Sorento in Germany. The new version keeps the same turbo diesel engine and dual-clutch automatic gearbox, but leaves out the AWD system.

The Sorento 2.2 CRDi 2WD uses an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission with a wet clutch. Its 2.2-litre turbo diesel produces 194 hp, equivalent to 142 kW. The engine is based on a weight-reduced four-cylinder unit with an aluminium block.

The switch to front-wheel drive does not remove the towing figure quoted for this configuration. Even as a front-driven diesel, the Sorento can tow a braked trailer of up to 2.5 tonnes. The differences compared with the AWD version appear in fuel consumption and acceleration.

  • New version: Sorento 2.2 CRDi 2WD.
  • Previous diesel configuration: Sorento 2.2 CRDi AWD.
  • Trim levels for the 2WD model: Vision and Spirit.
  • Other powertrains in the Sorento range: full hybrid and plug-in hybrid.

Specifications and technology

The front-wheel-drive diesel Sorento accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 9.5 seconds. That is 0.2 seconds quicker than the all-wheel-drive version quoted in the material. Top speed is unchanged at 201 km/h.

Combined fuel consumption is listed at 6.2 litres per 100 km. By comparison, the AWD version is rated at 6.6 litres per 100 km. A kerb weight is not stated, but the published figures show a lower consumption value for the 2WD setup.

The body measures 4.82 metres in length. The car is configured as a five-seater as standard, while the higher Spirit trim can be ordered with a third row of seats. In that layout, the Sorento can carry up to seven people.

The second row offers room for three child seats, with ISOFIX mounts on the two outer positions. ISOFIX mounts are also fitted to the two seats in the optional third row. The boot capacity of the five-seat diesel version is 902 litres measured to the lower edge of the windows.

Markets, prices and availability

Deliveries of the Kia Sorento 2.2 CRDi 2WD in Germany will begin in January 2027. The starting price for the Vision trim is 54,690 euros. In addition to Vision, the new front-wheel-drive diesel will also be offered as Spirit.

Standard equipment on the Vision version includes a navigation and infotainment system, 18-inch alloy wheels, full LED headlights, two-zone automatic climate control, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel and front and rear parking sensors with a reversing camera. Safety equipment includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, highway assist, speed assist, lane following assist and forward collision warning with a turning function.

The Spirit version adds a digital cockpit with a 12.3-inch touchscreen, a surround sound system and additional assistance systems for lane changes, crossing traffic and oncoming traffic. The infotainment system supports wireless smartphone connections. Over-the-air updates are also included.

The Sorento range continues to include two electrified powertrains. The full hybrid produces 176 kW, while the plug-in hybrid is rated at 212 kW. The material does not state prices for those versions in relation to the new 2WD diesel, does not name markets beyond Germany and does not mention an official premiere event.

Verdict

The new Kia Sorento 2.2 CRDi 2WD puts the focus on a lower entry price, lower fuel consumption and the retained towing ability of the diesel model. With a price of 54,690 euros, a towing capacity of up to 2.5 tonnes and the option of seven seats, it is aimed at drivers who do not need AWD.
