What's new

The Porsche Cayenne Electric is set to offer series-production inductive charging, with the world premiere of the new model planned for the end of 2025. Porsche is showing a contactless charging system at IAA Mobility in Munich for use in a home garage or on an outdoor parking space. The system brings the familiar smartphone-style charging process to a large electric SUV without requiring a cable connection.

The first Porsche model to enable charging across an air gap will be the electric Cayenne expected in 2026. At IAA Mobility, the manufacturer is demonstrating the technology with a prototype wearing luminous paint. Energy is transferred between the charging hardware in the vehicle and the floor plate without a physical plug being attached to the car.

  • wireless charging system shown at IAA Mobility in Munich,
  • first series application planned for the electric Porsche Cayenne,
  • floor plate sales to begin with the ordering phase for the new Cayenne.

Specifications and technology

The contactless system provides a charging output of 11 kW and an efficiency of 90 percent. It consists of charging preparation installed between the vehicle's front wheels and a floor plate measuring around 80 by 12 cm. The plate is intended for installation in a private garage or on an uncovered parking space.

To start charging, the driver manoeuvres the car over the floor plate using the surround-view camera. Once positioned above the unit, the Cayenne lowers itself slightly and the charging process starts automatically. Charging can also be monitored and controlled via an app.

Inductive charging output11 kW

Floor plate dimensionsaround 80 by 12 cm
Energy transfer distancea few centimetres

The contactless transfer of energy between the two charging units takes place over a distance of only a few centimetres. The floor plate includes a motion detector and foreign-object detection, details that matter when the system is used outside as well as in a garage. Porsche presents the system primarily as a way to make home charging easier to handle in daily use.

Markets, prices and availability

The world premiere of the Cayenne Electric is planned for the end of 2025, while the electric model itself is expected for 2026. Sales of the floor plate will start together with the ordering option for the new Cayenne. The device will be sold through Porsche Centres and the manufacturer's online shop.

Porsche has not named a price for the inductive charging system. The company also has not provided trim levels, sales markets, powertrain data, battery capacity, range or performance figures for the Cayenne Electric. Michael Steiner, Porsche's board member for development, says ease of operation, everyday usability and charging infrastructure remain decisive factors for the acceptance of electric mobility.

Verdict

The key message ahead of the Cayenne Electric debut is the move of cable-free charging into a series Porsche model. The figures given in Munich are specific: 11 kW, 90 percent efficiency, automatic charging start and a floor plate designed for domestic use. If it launches alongside the new Cayenne ordering phase, the biggest change for the driver will be the daily charging routine rather than the act of plugging in the car.

Frequently asked questions

When is the Porsche Cayenne premiere?

The world premiere of the Porsche Cayenne Electric is planned for the end of 2025. CarsUpcoming lists it as December 2025, with month-level precision.

When will the Porsche Cayenne go on sale in the UK?

How much will the Porsche Cayenne cost?

The price of the Porsche Cayenne has not been announced for the UK or any other market. Porsche has also not named a price for the inductive charging system.

Should I wait for the Porsche Cayenne or buy the current model now?

What is known is that the Cayenne Electric is set to bring series-production wireless charging, with 11 kW output, 90 percent efficiency and automatic charging once the car is positioned over the floor plate. Porsche has not yet provided trim levels, battery capacity, range or performance figures, so a full comparison with the current model is not possible yet.

How does wireless charging work in the Porsche Cayenne?
