What's new

The key change in the new Toyota bZ4X is a substantially revised electric drive system with new batteries, higher output, faster charging and a longer driving range. Toyota describes the update as more than a routine facelift, because it covers the powertrain, platform, equipment and cabin layout. The electric SUV, introduced in 2022, has already reached more than 150,000 customer deliveries since its market debut.

The earlier bZ4X was valued for its behaviour in winter conditions and for genuine off-road ability. The revised car develops those same areas with upgraded eAxle units, X-MODE drive control and functions for mud, snow and rougher terrain. Visually, it receives a redesigned front end, while the interior gains a standard 14-inch multimedia display and a new centre console with two wireless charging pads.

  • new 57.7 kWh and 73.1 kWh battery packs,
  • higher output from the front and rear motors,
  • DC charging from 10 to 80% in 28 minutes with a pre-heated battery,
  • WLTP range of up to 569 km,
  • Style and Executive equipment grades,
  • Polish pre-sale price from 165,900 zÅ‚.

Specifications and technology

The battery range consists of a 57.7 kWh pack, available only in Style trim with front-wheel drive, and a larger 73.1 kWh pack, offered with either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. The longest range is delivered by the front-wheel-drive version with the larger battery and 18-inch wheels. In that specification Toyota quotes up to 569 km of WLTP range.

The upgraded eAxle units combine the transmission, motor and inverter in compact, lightweight modules. Output from the front motor rises from 150 to 165 kW, an increase of more than 11%, while the rear unit goes from 80 to 87 kW. In the all-wheel-drive version, total system output is 252 kW, or 343 hp, making this the most powerful Toyota model available in Europe according to the company.

Charging, off-road systems and equipment

Charging has also been revised. Executive models receive a standard 22 kW onboard AC charger, while Style uses an 11 kW charger. A new battery pre-heating function can prepare the battery before the car reaches a fast charger, either manually through the multimedia system, by a scheduled start time or automatically when a fast-charging point is selected as the navigation destination.

With the battery fully pre-heated, DC fast charging from 10 to 80% takes 28 minutes. Toyota states that charging performance remains consistent in outside temperatures from -10 to +25°C. The all-wheel-drive version can tow a braked trailer weighing up to 1,500 kg, while the front-wheel-drive model remains limited to 750 kg.

X-MODE adjusts the vehicle’s behaviour when driving in mud or snow at speeds below 20 km/h. In more difficult off-road conditions, Grip Control operates below 10 km/h and manages the vehicle speed whether it is travelling downhill, uphill or on level ground. Hill descent control is also fitted, and Toyota quotes a wading depth of up to 500 mm.

Trim structure

Executive adds 20-inch alloy wheels, the 22 kW onboard charger, a digital rear-view mirror, Toyota Teammate Advanced Park, synthetic leather upholstery and front seats that are heated, ventilated and electrically adjustable, with memory settings for the driver. Radiant heating for first-row passengers is also included. The safety package is expanded with Lane Change Assist and Front Cross Traffic Alert.

Verdict

The revised bZ4X brings clear technical gains: a larger battery option, higher output, quicker charging and richer equipment.
