Technical description:

What's new

The MG4 EV Urban has made its debut in the United Kingdom as MG's new entry-level electric car, positioned below the updated MG4 planned for 2026. The five-door hatchback is about 4.40 metres long and is presented as a lower-priced, family-oriented compact EV with usable space. A launch in Germany has not yet been officially confirmed, although a wider European rollout is considered likely.

The key technical change compared with the MG4 is the drive layout. The Urban uses front-wheel drive rather than the rear-wheel-drive arrangement of the MG4, which separates it clearly from the existing model. At the same time, MG is preparing a broad update for the MG4 EV, with changes covering interior quality, technology, driving dynamics and range.

Specifications and technology

Two battery versions are planned from launch. The Comfort Standard Range version uses a 43 kWh battery, delivers around 320 kilometres of range and has an electric motor rated at 110 kW/150 hp. Above it sits the Comfort Long Range, with a 54 kWh battery, 415 kilometres of range and 118 kW/160 hp.

  • Comfort Standard Range: 43 kWh battery, around 320 km of range, 110 kW/150 hp.
  • Comfort Long Range: 54 kWh battery, 415 km of range, 118 kW/160 hp.
  • Drive layout: front-wheel drive, instead of the rear-wheel-drive layout used by the MG4.

Inside, the car gets a central infotainment touchscreen measuring 15.6 inches and a 7.0-inch digital instrument cluster. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included. The listed standard equipment also includes adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring and a Vehicle-to-Load function that allows external devices to be powered from the car.

Markets, prices and availability

The model premiered in the United Kingdom, where the Urban is being introduced as an affordable electric hatchback for families. Pricing in that market starts at £23,500. The stated conversion is around €27,500.

That price places the Urban clearly below the updated MG4 scheduled for 2026. The difference is described as a little over €7,000 after conversion. For Germany, the missing details concern both official market confirmation and timing, while a broader European launch is regarded as likely.

  • Premiere market: United Kingdom.
  • UK starting price: £23,500.
  • Stated conversion: around €27,500.
  • Germany: no official confirmation yet.

Verdict

The MG4 EV Urban brings MG a lower-priced electric compact with two battery choices, front-wheel drive and a defined set of standard equipment. Its main separation from the MG4 lies in price and drivetrain layout, while its wider relevance in Europe depends on confirmation beyond the UK market.
