What's new
The Cupra Raval made its world debut on 9 April 2026 as the brand’s new entry-level electric car. Markus Haupt, head of Cupra and Seat, describes it as the largest transformation project for the company. The car will sit below the Born and Tavascan in Cupra’s electric range while keeping the brand’s sporty positioning.
Raval is the first of four new small electric models planned by the Volkswagen Group for the coming months. It will be followed by the Volkswagen ID. Polo, Volkswagen ID. Cross and Skoda Epiq. They use the same platform, but Haupt says the differentiation between the models is clear and every brand keeps its own identity.
The car has compact dimensions, with a length of 4 metres, and Cupra points to its exterior design, cabin design and performance-oriented character. The interior features a large touchscreen, while Formula E has influenced the cabin sound. In the interview, Haupt positioned the model above cheaper references such as the BYD Dolphin Surf and Citroen e-C3 by pointing to equipment and substance normally associated with higher segments.
Specifications and technology
Batteries and performance
Two batteries and two cell technologies are planned. The entry version uses a 37 kWh LFP battery and has a stated range of 300 km, so Haupt sees it mainly as a car for customers who drive in urban areas. The second battery is a 52 kWh NMC pack with a range of up to 450 km.
The NMC batteries use Volkswagen Group’s new unified cell. Haupt confirmed that these cells will be used for the first time in these vehicles. Sales will start with the larger battery version, as the cars are due to reach markets in summer.
- LFP battery: 37 kWh, 300 km range.
- NMC battery: 52 kWh, up to 450 km range.
- Power outputs: 116 hp, 135 hp, 211 hp and 226 hp in the VZ version.
- VZ version: 0-100 km/h in under 7 seconds and a front axle differential lock.
| Parameter | Value |
|---|
| Length | 4 m |
| Battery | 37 kWh LFP or 52 kWh NMC |
| Range | 300 km or up to 450 km |
| Power | 116 hp, 135 hp, 211 hp, 226 hp VZ |
| 0-100 km/h | under 7 seconds in VZ version |
The VZ is intended to express the Cupra character most clearly. Haupt mentions 226 hp, acceleration from 0-100 km/h in less than 7 seconds and a front axle lock to support the driving dynamics. The lower-output versions give Cupra several price and performance points while keeping both battery options in the plan.
Markets, prices and availability
Sales start and positioning
Cupra opened the online configurator at the time of the world premiere. Customers are expected to be able to buy the car in summer 2026, and the starting price is described as just under 26,000 euros. Haupt calls this the democratisation of electrification, because the Raval is intended to reach buyers who remain sceptical about electric cars.
Germany is Cupra’s most important market, and the brand expects purchase incentives there to help demand. Spain also has an incentive scheme, which Haupt sees as another support factor. Cupra wants the Raval to become its best-selling electric car alongside the Born and Tavascan.
- Cupra electric models: Born, Tavascan and, from 2026, Raval.
- Other models on the same platform: Volkswagen ID. Polo, Volkswagen ID. Cross and Skoda Epiq.
- Cheaper reference models named in the interview: BYD Dolphin Surf and Citroen e-C3.
- Markets and incentive schemes mentioned by Haupt: Germany and Spain.
Electric-car production has been prepared at Martorell, where Seat and Cupra invested 3 billion euros in the plant’s transformation. Volkswagen Group and its partners have invested 10 billion euros in Spain for electromobility projects. Battery-system capacity in Martorell is 300,000 units a year, and Haupt says that corresponds one-to-one with vehicle capacity.
Haupt expects the BEV share in Europe to reach at least 25 percent after exceeding 17 percent in the previous year. In Germany, he says incentives should push the share beyond 30 percent. At the same time, he stresses that the customer ultimately decides the pace of the shift and that electric cars are still clearly more expensive than combustion models.
Verdict
The Raval is a central model for Cupra because it combines a sub-26,000-euro entry point with two battery sizes, four power levels and a VZ version at the top. The key dates are now set: world premiere on 9 April, configurator opened immediately and sales planned for summer 2026. If incentives in Germany and Spain support demand as Cupra expects, this can become the brand’s most important electric model.
