What's new

The Peugeot 408 has been given a refreshed front end with three slanted LED strips that also work as turn indicators. This is the clearest exterior change described for the new version of the model. The car also introduces a rear detail that has not previously appeared in Peugeot's range.

At the back, the 408 is the first model in the line-up to feature an illuminated PEUGEOT badge. The model is also available for the first time in the Flare Green body colour, described as an exclusive finish. The update therefore covers both the front lighting signature and the rear visual identity.

Inside, a new digital instrument cluster with revised graphics is standard. In GT Exclusive trim, and optionally in GT, the digital cluster gains new 3D graphics. The boot capacity is listed at up to 536 litres, which is the main practicality figure given for the car.

Specifications and technology

Powertrains and range

The powertrain range is described as fully electrified. The electric version produces 213 hp, or 157 kW, and delivers 343 Nm of torque. Its declared mixed-cycle WLTP range is up to 456 km.

The plug-in hybrid version combines a petrol engine producing 180 hp, or 132 kW, with a 92 kW electric motor. The system is paired with a 7-speed e-DCS7 dual-clutch gearbox. In fully electric mode, the plug-in hybrid can cover up to 85 km.

There is also the Peugeot 408 Hybrid 145 e-DCS6. This version combines a petrol engine producing 145 hp, or 107 kW, with a 6-speed electrified automatic dual-clutch gearbox. Its traction battery charges automatically while driving.

In city driving, the Hybrid 145 e-DCS6 can run in zero-emission electric mode for as much as 50 percent of driving time. That separates it from the plug-in hybrid, which is described with a specific electric driving range. All the listed versions support the statement that the 408 range is built around electrified drivetrains.

Markets, prices and availability

Market positioning

On the market, the new Peugeot 408 will compete, among others, with the Renault Rafale. This is the only rival named for the model, so the comparison should not be extended beyond it. The stated competitor places the 408 among cars with a strong body style focus and electrified drivetrains.

Prices and availability on the Polish market are not yet known. No exact market launch date or start of sales has been given either, so the premiere window remains undefined. What is clear is that the line-up is set to include an electric version, a plug-in hybrid and the Hybrid 145 e-DCS6.

The structure of the range is straightforward because it covers three forms of electrification. The electric version carries the highest stated WLTP range without a combustion engine, the plug-in hybrid offers electric driving for up to 85 km, and the Hybrid 145 e-DCS6 charges its battery automatically while on the move. The differences between them come directly from the technical data provided for the 408.

Verdict

The updated Peugeot 408 focuses on visible body details, a digital instrument display and a powertrain range built around three electrified options. The most concrete information concerns range, output and boot capacity, while prices and Polish availability are still pending. Based on the data provided, the illuminated badge, the 213 hp electric version and the plug-in hybrid range of up to 85 km are the key points of this update.
