What's new
BMW has put the still-camouflaged M350 xDrive in the hands of journalists at its proving ground near Miramas, France, ahead of an official reveal planned for late September 2026. The new M Performance 3 Series sedan is internally known as G50 and replaces the European M340i xDrive. Its headline changes are a stronger B58 engine and a quicker sprint to 62 mph.
The new car reaches 62 mph in 4.1 seconds, three tenths quicker than the European-spec M340i xDrive it succeeds. BMW quotes the same 4.1-second figure for North America, although the comparison is not direct because the previous U.S. M340i was measured from 0-60 mph and already matched that number. Wheel Front reads the figures as suggesting that a 4.0-second 0-60 mph run may be realistic, while a sub-four-second result is considered unlikely.
- new generation code: G50,
- replacement for the European M340i xDrive,
- uprated B58 engine,
- 0-62 mph time cut by 0.3 second,
- larger body with extra weight acknowledged by BMW.
BMW admits the G50 is a larger car, so some of the extra output will be offset by additional mass. Even with the bodywork still hidden under camouflage, the mechanical direction is clear. The car brings more power, more software-driven performance features and a setup that moves the M Performance sedan closer to tools previously associated with full M models.
Specifications and technology
The upgraded B58 engine produces 437 hp and 428 lb-ft of torque. It is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The outgoing European M340i had been detuned to meet stricter emissions rules, so BMW expects the difference between regional versions to narrow with this generation.
| Parameter | Value |
|---|
| Model | BMW M350 xDrive |
| Body style | Sedan |
| Drivetrain | xDrive with rear-wheel-drive-only mode |
| Power | 437 hp |
| Torque | 428 lb-ft |
| 0-62 mph | 4.1 seconds |
| Transmission | 8-speed automatic |
| iDrive X screen | 17.9 inches |
The most visible change in how the car exposes its performance hardware appears on the 17.9-inch iDrive X touchscreen. BMW has created a dedicated launch-control tutorial page that guides the driver through activation step by step. It displays live criteria including steering angle, brake pedal force and accelerator position.
Once every condition is met, the driver releases the brake and the car leaves the line using the launch-control program. In many performance cars this procedure has traditionally been hidden in an owner's manual or passed around through online videos. Here, BMW places it directly in the infotainment system, making the function far easier to discover and repeat.
The M350 xDrive will also offer a rear-wheel-drive-only mode despite being an all-wheel-drive model. BMW confirmed that the Drift Moment feature comes straight from the M3's toolkit. This is the first time such a function has appeared in an M Performance sedan, which changes the usual distance between the so-called M Lite cars and full M products.
Markets, prices and availability
The G50 is due to break cover officially in late September 2026. European deliveries are expected by the end of the year or in early 2027. BMW has not announced pricing, a full trim structure, detailed market equipment, final weight figures or full exterior dimensions.
BMW did not specify which drive modes and traction-control settings will be needed for launch control, pointing to the prototype status of the car. The company did confirm that Drift Moment will not be present at the start of sales. It is planned as an over-the-air software update sometime in 2027.
- official reveal: late September 2026,
- European deliveries: by the end of 2026 or early 2027,
- Drift Moment: over-the-air update in 2027,
- dedicated rear-wheel-drive successor to the M340i: not confirmed by BMW.
Asked about a dedicated rear-wheel-drive model to succeed the M340i, BMW gave answers vague enough to sound like a soft no. The presence of a 2WD mode in the xDrive version reads as the consolation for buyers who wanted the simpler drivetrain. For now, the all-wheel-drive M350 xDrive is the model BMW is putting forward.
Verdict
The BMW M350 xDrive G50 looks set to be a quicker and stronger successor to the M340i xDrive, but not a simpler one. With 437 hp, 428 lb-ft, a 4.1-second 0-62 mph time, an on-screen launch-control guide and Drift Moment arriving later, BMW is bringing M3-style functions into its M Performance sedan.
